Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario won the 2025 Los Cabos Open on Saturday. The third seed in this ATP 250 level tournament, Shapovalov defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic of the United States in the final, 6-4, 6-2. Shapovalov had the advantage when it came to serving. Shapovalov had six aces, compared to two for Kovacevic.
Shapovalov also had the advantage when it came to returning service. Shapovalov had eight break point opportunities, where he broke Kovacevic thrice. Kovacevic had one break point chance, and did not break Shapovalov’s serve.
One statistic that was mighty impressive throughout the week was the fact that Shapovalov only allowed eight aces in the entire tournament. The fact his opponents only averaged two aces per match meant that Shapovalov was doing an excellent job of getting his racquet on the tennis ball on a very regular basis.
This was Shapovalov’s fourth career ATP title. He previously won 6-4, 6-4 over Filip Krajinovic of Serbia in the final of the 2019 Stockholm Open, 6-4, 6-4 over Hamad Medjedovic of Serbia in the final of the 2024 Serbian Open, and 7-6, 6-3 over Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final of the 2025 Dallas Open. Shapovalov has now won three ATP events since November, and is set to climb five spots in the ATP World Rankings from 33rd spot to 28th.
