Team Canada has won its first game of the 2025 Gold Cup, and they did so in convincing fashion. In a blowout from BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia (the only game in the entire tournament held in Canada), Canada trounced Honduras 6-0. The Gold Cup is held once every two years and is the continental soccer tournament for teams in North America, Central America and the Caribbean.
One Canadian scored twice for Canada. Midfielder Tajon Buchanan of Brampton, Ontario, who plays for Villarreal in Spain’s La Liga, had goals in the 48th and 65th minute. The other four Canadian goal scorers were defensive midfielder Niko Sigur (27th minute), forward Taniu Oluwaseyi of Mississauga, Ontario (second minute of extra time in the first half), striker Promise David of Brampton, Ontario (75th minute), and midfielder Nathan Saliba of Longueuil, Quebec (90th minute). Sigur plays for Hajduk Split in Croatia, Oluwaseyi plays for Minnesota United in Major League Soccer, David plays for Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, and Saliba plays for CF Montreal in MLS.
Canada’s next two Group B games are in the United States. They play Curacao in Houston on Saturday, and then El Salvador in Houston on Tuesday. In the other Group B game on Tuesday from San Jose, California, El Salvador and Curacao played to a 0-0 tie.
