
Team Canada has stayed alive in the 2025 World Volleyball Nations League. On Friday, Canada defeated the Netherlands 25-22, 25-20, 25-15 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to improve their record to four wins and six losses.
The Canadians are currently in 14th place in the Preliminary Round. It is mathematically possible for Canada to still reach the top seven and the final round in China. They will need to beat Serbia on Saturday and Ukraine on Sunday in Ljubljana, and gets lots of help.
In Friday’s win, Canada was led in scoring by opposite Xander Wassenaar Ketrzynski of Toronto, Ontario, who had 16 points (15 attack points and one block point), outside hitter Isaac Heslinga of Orangeville, Ontario, who had 12 points (11 attack points and one block point), and captain and middle blocker Fynn McCarthy of Kelowna, British Columbia, who had 10 points (seven attack points, one block point and two aces).
On the women’s side, Canada won their final game of the Women’s Volleyball Nations League in Arlington, Texas this past Sunday, to improve to a record of three wins and nine losses. Canada defeated Thailand 17-25, 25-23, 30-28, 23-25, 15-13. Canada previously beat Bulgaria and Serbia in Ottawa. In Canada’s win over Thailand, three Canadians reached double digits in points. Outside hitter Hilary Johnson of Calgary, Alberta had 25 points (22 attack points, two blocked points, one ace), middle blocker Emily Maglio of Cranbrook, British Columbia had 19 points (10 attack points, eight blocked points and one ace), and opposite hitter Andrea Mitrovic of Mississauga, Ontario had 13 points (all attack points).
