Brett Howden scores second NHL playoff overtime winner

Vegas Golden Knights centre Brett Howden of Calgary, Alberta scored his second National Hockey League playoff overtime winner on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat in a 3-2 Golden Knights win over the Minnesota Wild in game five of the first round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the victory, the Golden Knights lead the Wild in the best out of seven series three games to two.

Howden scored an all-Canadian goal. Tanner Pearson and defenseman Nicholas Hague, both of Kitchener, Ontario, picked up the assists at 4:05 of the extra period.

Another Golden Knights player from Canada scored in game five. Mark Stone of Winnipeg, Manitoba put the Golden Knights up 2-1 with six minutes and 36 seconds left in the first period.

Howden’s first Stanley Cup Playoff overtime winner came on May 19, 2023 in a 4-3 Golden Knights win over the Dallas Stars. He scored at 1:35 of the extra period on another all-Canadian goal. Chandler Stephenson of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Stone had the assists.

In 2024-25, Howden had 23 goals and 17 assists for 40 points in 80 regular season games. He was a +17 with 46 penalty minutes, one shorthanded point, 125 shots on goal, 272 faceoff wins, 56 blocked shots, 121 hits, 22 takeaways, and 42 giveaways.

Game six now shifts to Minnesota. The game will take place on Thursday.
