Team Canada is in the final on Sunday of the 2025 Hopman Cup in Bari, Italy. On Saturday in women’s singles action, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario defeated Despina Papamichail of Greece 6-1, 6-2 in a dominant performance.
The win by Andreescu means the men’s match between Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada and Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, and a possible doubles match between Andreescu and Auger-Aliassime versus Tsitsipas and Papamichail does not mean anything. Canada has won all four of their matches to date (swept Spain on Friday), and will play Italy in Sunday’s final. If Canada lost to Greece today, they would get the first place tiebreaker.
This will be the first time ever that Canada is in the Hopman Cup final. Their opponent on Sunday will be the host Italians. Italy beat France and Croatia to reach the final. The Italians are represented by Flavio Cobolli of Florence, Italy and Lucia Bronzetti of Rimini, Italy.
Cobolli has the slight edge on Auger-Aliassime in the world rankings. Cobolli is currently ranked 19th and Auger-Aliassime is ranked 28th. Cobolli won both prior meetings in 2024. The first match was the first round in Acapulco, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, and the second match was the first round of the National Bank Open in Montreal, which Cobolli won 6-3, 6-2. This will be the first time Andreescu will have faced Bronzetti.
