For the second time in three days, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Summer McIntosh of Toronto, Ontario has set a world record in swimming. On Saturday, McIntosh set the world record in the women’s 400 metre freestyle, and on Monday, McIntosh set the world record in the women’s 200 metre individual medley at the Canadian Swimming Trials from Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, British Columbia.

McIntosh’s time on Monday was 2:05.70. She beat the previous world record by 0.42 seconds. That was set by Katkina Hosszu of Hungary, who had a world record time of 2:06.12 at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia.

McIntosh now has three world records. She also has the world record in the women’s 400 metre individual medley, which was set at the 2024 Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto, Ontario.

When McIntosh won the gold medal in the women’s 200 metre individual medley at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, her time was 2:06.56. She swam 1.14 seconds faster on Monday than when she won Olympic gold.

McIntosh’s other gold medals at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris came in the women’s 200 metre butterfly and the women’s 400 mere individual medley. McIntosh’s world record in Victoria will give her significant confidence as she prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
