Team Canada beat Serbia on Sunday in Women’s Volleyball Nations League action from Toronto Dominion Place in Ottawa, Ontario by a score of 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-12. With the win, Canada improved its record to two wins and two losses.

Canada was led by captain and opposite spiker Kiera Van Ryk of New Westminster, British Columbia. Van Ryk had a game for the ages, as she had 24 attack points, nine aces and one block point for 34 points overall. You could make the argument that it was one of the finest single game performances ever by a Canadian women’s volleyball player.

With the win, Canada improved to a record of two wins and two losses. Canada’s other win over the past week came on Wednesday as they beat Bulgaria 25-18, 25-12, 23-25, 19-25, 15-4. In the final set against Bulgaria, we saw some of the finest defense ever by a Canadian women’s volleyball team. Meanwhile, Canada’s losses came against the Netherlands on Thursday (25-18, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23), and Japan on Saturday (26-24, 25-20, 25-19). Canada is currently tied for sixth place with Germany, China, Netherlands, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and the Dominican Republic. Canada next plays South Korea on June 18 in Istanbul, Turkey.

The top eight teams from the preliminary round qualifies for the final round.  That takes place in Lodz, Poland, starting July 23 and running to July 27.
